Selling a bike feels simple until you start. You take a few photos, choose a price, and post it somewhere. Then the small decisions begin. Which platform is worth using. Whether shipping is worth the risk. What to do when the first message arrives at 11pm asking if you’ll accept a payment method you have never heard of.

Most advice about selling a bike still seems written for an easier internet. Before higher fees, more cautious buyers, and the strange little rituals of avoiding scams became part of the process. This guide is the version we wish we’d had: practical, current, and written for the way people actually sell a bike in 2026.

The 30-second version

  • Price against sold prices, not asking prices. Lookup median values on Paceline, eBay Terapeak, and Bicycle Blue Book.
  • BIN + Best Offer on eBay, list ~12% above target, auto-accept at 85-92%, auto-decline at 60-70%.
  • Local cash on Facebook Marketplace, no shipping unless the buyer pays via the platform’s native Checkout (5-10% fee).
  • Eight photos in shade, including the head-tube serial number. Stock photos are banned on eBay for used items.
  • Never F&F, Zelle, Venmo F&F, or wire transfers from strangers. PayPal Goods & Services or cash only.

Platform-by-platform

Facebook Marketplace

Local cash king

$0 fees on local pickup

  • 10% fee on shipped sales (US).
  • First 24-48hr is the visibility window. Renewing >5x trips an aged-stock flag.
  • Cycling buy/sell groups beat public Marketplace for $1,500+ bikes.

eBay

Deepest buyer pool

13.6% FVF on bikes

  • Per-order fee $0.30 under $10 / $0.40 over $10. E-bikes 12.9%.
  • New sellers face a 21-day payment hold. Upload tracking immediately.
  • Revise listings, don’t end + relist. Cassini throttles non-converters at 90 days.

Pinkbike BuySell

Cycling-specialist marketplace

Free for private listings

  • Largest North American used-bike classifieds; buyers already know what a Tarmac is.
  • No native escrow; arrange PayPal G&S or use a shop as intermediary.
  • Best for premium frames + groupsets. Less reach for sub-$1,000 commuters.

Pricing the bike

Most first-time sellers do the same thing. They open a marketplace, glance at three other listings, and price somewhere in the middle. It feels like research. It isn’t. Asking prices live in a different world from closing prices, usually 15 to 25% higher. Anchor to what bikes actually sell for, not what other people hope to get.

Tools that show closing prices, not just asking prices:

  • Paceline– daily-refreshed valuations across US, UK, and EU markets, built from real listings on eBay, Buycycle, The Pro’s Closet, and specialist shops.
  • eBay Terapeak Product Research – free inside Seller Hub, up to 3 years of sold-listing data, filterable to “Used”.
  • Bicycle Blue Book – conservative; treat as a price floor.
  • Pinkbike BuySell – largest North American used-road and MTB classifieds. Asking prices, but a useful sanity check.

Zero serious inquiries by day 7 means drop 5%. Another dry week means drop another 5-7%. After 30 days, delete and relist with fresh photos.

Photos

Photos are the single highest-leverage thing you control. The difference between a bike that sells in 48 hours and one that sits for a month is usually the photo set, not the price.

The eight shots every listing needs

  • Drive side, full frame, square crop – this is the hero shot
  • Non-drive side, same composition
  • Drivetrain close-up – cassette, derailleur, chain
  • Cockpit from above – bars, stem, brake levers
  • Head-tube serial number – both anti-theft signal and provenance
  • Every visible scratch or wear point – multiple close-ups
  • Full bike with scale reference (next to a person or doorway)
  • Optional: palm holding paper with today’s date – proof-of-possession

Shoot outdoors in overcast light or open shade. Direct sun blows out carbon and chrome. Clean the drivetrain first – a dirty cassette is the biggest visible deal-killer on a premium frame.

Per-platform photo limits

  • eBay: 24 photos free (40-photo pilot rolling out), 1 video slot. Minimum 500px, 1600px+ unlocks zoom. Stock photos are banned for used items.
  • Facebook Marketplace: 10 photos max, 1200px long edge recommended, 1:1 or 4:3 aspect ratio. Mobile-uploaded listings outperform desktop by roughly 23% in impressions and 17% in response time.
  • Gumtree: 9 photos free, 20 with a Featured Ad upgrade. 8MB cap per photo.

Listing copy

Title formula varies sharply by platform. eBay rewards keyword-stuffed titles (its search engine literally indexes them); Facebook penalizes the same approach as “spammy”.

eBay title (80-char hard limit, mobile truncates ~50)

[Year] [Brand] [Model] [Submodel] [Size]cm [Groupset] [Wheel/Brake] [Material] Road Bike

Front-load year, brand, model, size. The subtitle field is paid AND not search-indexed; skip it. Fill every Item Specific you can – eBay’s left-rail filters surface listings based on these fields, not your title.

Facebook Marketplace title (100 chars, casual tone)

Skip the keyword stuffing. Lead with brand + model + year + size + condition, conversational tone. Always set a category – Facebook deprioritizes uncategorized listings as of 2024.

Gumtree title (70 chars working ceiling)

Brand, model, frame size, year. Cross-post to the relevant local cycling groups (London Fixed Gear & SS Market, Bristol Cyclists Market, Road Cycling UK Marketplace).

Shipping

Most bikes sell locally. If you do ship, the decision tree:

  • US domestic: BikeFlights at $60-150 ground (5-9 days). Local bike shop pack-and-ship is $50-100 labor and worth it for fragile carbon frames.
  • E-bikes: sell locally. Almost every e-bike battery (400-1000Wh) exceeds the 160Wh ground-shipping ceiling under UN3480/UN3481 lithium-battery rules. Major couriers require dangerous-goods contracts and HazMat surcharges. The practical answer for an e-bike is in-person only.
  • International: HS code 8712.00 for any non-motorised bicycle. Landed cost typically adds 20-30% in duty + VAT for the buyer; either price accordingly or warn them upfront.

Payment safety

Almost every active scam in 2026 is a variation on a small number of patterns. The ones below cover the variations a bike seller actually meets. They share one move: they ask you to do something quickly. Most of them lose their power once you can name the shape of them.

Scam patterns to refuse on sight

  • Fake Zelle “business upgrade”: buyer claims payment sent, demands you wire a few hundred to “upgrade your account”. The inbound email is spoofed. Zelle does not have business-upgrade fees.
  • Six-digit verification code:“just confirming you’re real”. Reading a verification code to anyone attaches your phone number to an account you don’t control. Never read a code aloud, for any reason.
  • “I’ll send my courier”: the buyer offers an unfamiliar courier and asks you to front the shipping fee. Marketplace platforms support only the well-known national carriers; any custom-courier ask is the scam.
  • Address harvesting:the buyer arranges to collect a cheap item, photographs the high-value bike in the background, returns later to steal. Don’t list bikes from your home address; use a meeting point.
  • Marketplace address-change after purchase: voids most seller-protection schemes. Cancel and refund instead of accommodating.
  • Test-ride sprint-off: trending on premium e-bikes since 2024. The 2026 norm: collect a photo ID, vehicle keys, and a credit card, held physically, before any test ride.

Safe payment methods

  • Cash for local pickup. Count it before handing over the bike. Meet at a busy, public place where possible.
  • PayPal Goods & Services for shipped bikes. No value cap on bicycles; not in PayPal’s excluded list. Buyer protection on their side is also your fraud filter: legitimate buyers don’t flinch at G&S.
  • Never: Friends & Family transfers, any peer-to-peer app used outside its consumer-protection scope, wire transfers to strangers, gift cards. These all waive every protection scheme the platform offers.

The eBay $750 number every bike seller should memorize

Without signature confirmation on shipments above $750, you have zero Item Not Received protection from eBay. Buy signature confirmation from your label provider, even on a $760 sale. This is the single most-missed seller-protection rule for high-ticket items.

Timing

Bike demand follows weather more than economics. eBay’s sold data shows:

  • June peak at roughly 14% of annual demand.
  • January trough at 3-5% of annual demand.
  • Road bikes: March-May (spring, National Bike Month). Prices firm through June.
  • Gravel and cyclocross: August-October as CX season opens and gravel events cluster.
  • Sunday 7-10pm local end-time on auctions: in one 120-listing eBay split, Sunday 9pm Eastern end times beat weekday end times by 42% in final price.

Negotiation

Standard lowball reply: “Thanks for the offer. Price is set to current market data; I can hold at $X for 24 hours if you can commit.” Acknowledges the offer, anchors to data, applies mild scarcity, no insult.

  • Hold firm for 7 days. Drop 5% on day 8 if no serious inquiries.
  • Cash discount norm: 5% for in-person cash, 10% if it clears the bike same day.
  • “Will collect tomorrow if you reserve” is the universal tire-kicker tell. Reply “First in person with cash gets it” and keep showing the bike.

Paperwork that increases the price

  • Original purchase receipt photographed. Single highest-impact trust signal.
  • Strava odometer screenshot as secondary provenance.
  • Frame serial number in the listing. Double signal: anti-theft (nothing to hide) and anti-buyer-fraud (you have documented what you shipped, which defends against SNAD swap claims later).
  • Pre-register on a public stolen-bike database and cite the record in your listing. Bike Index (US, 1.4M+ bikes), Project 529 Garage (US, 1.7M+, partnered with 400+ police agencies), BikeRegister (UK, used by every UK police force). Free on all three. Buyers check in 2026.
  • StolenBikes UK is no longer accepting new reports as of December 2023. Use BikeRegister instead in the UK.

Frequently asked questions

What is the safest way to get paid when selling a bike online?

It depends on where the buyer is. If they’re local, cash on collection at a police-monitored exchange zone is still the gold standard. If they’re shipping, PayPal Goods & Services covers bicycles with no dollar cap, and it’s the sensible default when the buyer is a stranger. The dangerous payment methods share a theme: they ask you to bypass the protection the platform offers. Friends & Family, Zelle (especially any “business upgrade” framing), Venmo F&F, wire transfer. Treat any of those as a no, no matter how the buyer frames it.

What is the best time of year to sell a road bike?

March through May for road, August through October for gravel and cyclocross. June is the absolute peak (around 14% of annual eBay demand) and January is the trough (3-5%). Avoid deep winter, Christmas through New Year, and major holiday weekends. Q4 retail spikes are general merchandise, not cycling.

What are eBay's seller fees on a used bike in 2026?

US: 13.6% Final Value Fee on item + shipping + tax + handling, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 under $10 / $0.40 over $10. E-bikes 12.9%. New sellers face a 21-day payment hold; eBay-supplied labels release funds 24 hours after delivery scan.

Should I use eBay's Best Offer feature?

Yes. Buy-It-Now listings with Best Offer enabled sell roughly 15-25% faster than fixed-price-only. Practitioner norm: list ~12% above your target, set auto-accept at 85-92% of list, auto-decline at 60-70%. This filters out lowball noise while capturing the real buyers who would have walked from a "firm" listing.

How do I avoid Facebook Marketplace scams?

Local cash only. Meet at a police-monitored exchange zone. Never share your home address before the buyer commits. Never accept "I’ll send a courier" or any overpayment-then-refund scheme. Ignore anyone claiming to have already sent payment via Zelle "business upgrade" or any unusual method. Never give out a 6-digit verification code "to confirm you’re real" (it’s a Google Voice number hijack). The FTC reported $2.1 billion in social-media-driven scam losses in 2025; Facebook ranks #1.

How long should a listing sit before I drop the price?

Hold firm for 7 days. If you have zero serious inquiries, drop 5% on day 8. Another dry week, drop 5-7% more. After 30 days, delete the listing entirely, take fresh photos, and relist. Renewing the same listing more than five times signals "aged stock" to platform algorithms and tanks visibility.

Ready to list?

One last step before you post.

The decision that moves more money than any other is the asking price. Knowing what your exact bike is worth, before you set it, is the difference between a fast sale and a long one. Thirty seconds, free.
